Special acknowledgement
Since Professor Rashida Manjoo is a co-editor of this
volume of articles, we could not dedicate this collection to
her. However, we would like to acknowledge the role that
Prof Manjoo has played in the struggle against violence
against women. Whether as a professor of law at UCT, a
parliamentary commissioner on South Africa’s Commission on
Gender Equality, or the United Nations Special Rapporteur
on Violence Against Women, Prof Manjoo has always pursued
equalit y and the full enjoyment of huma n rights for all women.
Her curriculum vitae is evidence of a long and il lustrious
career dedicated to the passionate pursuit of improving the
lived experiences of women.
In this short dedication, we would like to reect on Prof
Manjoo’s role as a colleague and a mentor to us. Throughout
the course of this project and throughout our years as sta
members at UCT, Prof Manjoo has been one of the senior
black women academics who has specically and deliberately
created opportunities for young academics, particularly black
women. Within the academy, Prof Manjoo has been an ear for
discontent, an eye over institutional injustice, and has used her
rank to air many a grievance on behalf of those colleagues in
more precarious pos itions. Her warmth and humour encour age
academic and non-academic sta alike and we all seek out her
reassuring advice. It is to her credit that her work is not only
academic, but is also borne out in her interactions with others,
especial ly other women.
As Prof Manjoo prepares for retirement at the end of
2020, we could not miss this opportunity to thank her for her
support, mentorship and friendship over the past six years. We
know that the mark that she has made on us and on others in
the academy and beyond will endure.
