Sentencing

General aspects
Parties: amicus curiae
Amicus curiae status was granted to the Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust to
submit written argument on sentence for the purpose of the appeal in
S v
Abrahams
2002 (1) SACR 116 (SCA) at 118. This is to be welcomed even if
relatively unusual in sentencing cases other than those that have involved
constitutional issues. An amicus curiae could provide valuable assistance of a
kind that might not be available from various experts called upon from time
to time to provide reports and other evidence relating to sentence.
